We trust that you all had a blessed Christmas and that 2012 will be a prosperous and fulfilling year. Your cattle are doing superbly well on the Hilton estate although we had a few issues with bloat in late November. Bloat is a condition that is a result of the cattle eating grass that is possibly too nutritious and there not being enough fibre in the grass to compensate. The cattle produce excess gas that is unable to escape unless treated. It’s often also connected to climatic conditions as was the case in this instance and quite a few of us local farmer’s experienced similar problems with our own herds. What was interesting was that all the cattle that gorged themselves and had to be treated were owned by Pearce people…… A similar problem existed at Hilton in the old days when Pearce house was connected to the dining hall and a number of boys appeared to suffer a human version of bloat! The cattle were all blocked for red water pre Christmas and we came through this holiday period unscathed. Well done to Rowan and his team for their continued good management. Lee Pope Ellis is leading the overall weight gain race with Duncan Howes close behind. Doug Dare and the Western province boys are once again right up there with the best of them in fourth place. Falcon House are leading the house division and Gautengis leading the provincial stakes. Rory O’Connor, our biggest single owner, with his cattle representing the United Arab Emirates is leading the country board. We will be having another weigh in shortly and I will send out an update thereafter, probably towards the end of January. The website has the latest pictures; please have a look when you have a chance and for those that haven’t please make sure you update your details. I don’t want to count the shekels before the cattle have passed over the weigh bridge (that’s a beef farmers version of “don’t count your chickens before they have hatched”), but as things stand we look like we are having a particularly good year both on weight gains and on the price move so our contribution towards bursaries could be substantial. Thank you for being a part of this project and making a significant contribution towards the welfare of Hilton.
