News Item
It’s been quite an interesting time being a beef farmer over the last few months. In December the beef price was at a record high, since January the price has been in a free fall and in stock market terms it would be classified as a crash! Fortunately we took advantage of the high prices in December to sell those cattle that were ready. We also made a decision to sell the remainder of the cattle at the re opening of the Nottinghamroad sale yards in early January. This proved to be quite an event with great local support and an excellent entry of cattle. There was much said about the Hilton farm cattle that came into the ring! There were quite a few (older) old boys there who came to support the re opening and they were very excited to see the cattle and hear about the project. The prices were not quite as good as those in December but still very good and over all the farm has made a healthy profit from the sale of the cattle with over R180 000 going towards bursaries! The result for season three of the cattle project was as follows: Overall winner: Lee Pope-Ellis Second Place: Duncan Howes Third Place: Doug Dare and the Western Capeold boys Jonathan de Villiers had another excellent placing in the top ten with Rory O’Connor also placing well with his mini herd from the UAE. In fact Rory took the overall country trophy, quite a thing having the United Arab Emirates winning a category, well done Rory! The winning province was Gauteng, the winning house Falcon and the dominant leaving year was 1999. Well done to everyone involved. The current prices have caused a bit of chaos in the market, we have decided to take advantage of this and have started restocking the estate with some excellent high quality oxen. A load arrived on Wednesday with a further load arriving today. There is a process involved in introducing the cattle to the estate but as soon as we are fully stocked and the cattle have settled down we will photograph them individually and you will be able to log on to view your new ox. We will aim to have this done by the end of May, with that being the official launch of season four of the cattle project. Rowan, Troy and I will also be meeting to discuss weigh in dates as well as a viewing date (a day specifically set aside for owners to come and view their cattle) as well as the prize giving date. I am aware that there is a huge diversity in the people that are involved in the project, for some tweeting is something they do daily, for others it’s what birds do early in the morning! With this in mind we will try and communicate in a way that covers just about everyone’s preferences. This project has grown from an initial herd of 50 cattle to the current 250 cattle we will be stocking this year. Thank you most sincerely for the part each of you has played in making the project such a success.
